Most Decorating Websites Don't Look Good.
They Don't Win Much Work Either.

People hire a painter and decorator on trust. You'll be in their home for days, moving furniture and working round the kids and the dog. Before they ring, they want to see your finish, a tidy job and a price that won't jump. Good painting and decorating websites show all three.

Most painting and decorating websites don't. A list of services, a few dark phone photos of a magnolia wall and a contact form that goes nowhere. I build websites for painters and decorators that show your work up close, sorted by job and colour, and make it easy to ask for a quote.

I build websites to do exactly that.

What people check before they hire a painter and decorator

Anyone can buy a roller. These are the questions a decorator's website has to answer to show you're the one worth paying properly.

  1. 01

    How good is the finish?

Sharp cut-in lines, smooth glossed woodwork, wallpaper with the pattern matched across every join. Close-up photos in daylight prove it better than any promise.

  2. 02

Will you look after my home?

Dust sheets down, furniture moved and covered, everything tidied each evening. Saying how you work, with a photo of a tidy job in progress, settles a real worry.

  3. 03

Do you do exactly what I need?

Wallpaper hanging, kitchen cabinet painting, a full exterior and a spray finish are different jobs. Clear pages tell people you do theirs, and do it often.

  4. 04

    Are you vetted?

Membership of the Dulux Select Decorators scheme or the Painting & Decorating Association, if you hold it, plus your insurance, gives people a reason to trust a stranger with their house.

Painted or sprayed kitchen units, uPVC windows and doors: specialist work people search for by name and pay more for.

Paying

I take no deposit and no booking fee. You pay nothing until you've seen and approved your homepage design. Then you pay the full price in one go, and I build the rest. The price is one-off. No VAT to add.

The See-It-First Guarantee

Your homepage design comes within 24 hours of your set-up call. 1 round of changes is included before you decide. You then have 2 working days to say yes or no, so I can hold your build slot. The 7-day clock pauses while you decide. If you say no, you owe nothing, and the unused design stays with me.

The 7-Day Launch Guarantee

The 7 working days start on your booked start date, with your set-up call. The clock only runs once I have everything on my set-up list: your details, logins and photos. It pauses while I'm waiting on you: for feedback, answers, your decision on your homepage design, your payment or access to your web address. 'Live' means your site is up on your own web address. If it isn't live in time because of a delay on my side, I pay you £100 by bank transfer within 7 days of launch. It's money, not a credit.

What I don't promise

I don't promise rankings, calls, enquiries or jobs. Google decides when and where your pages show up. My guarantees cover my own work.

How people choose a painter and decorator

Most decorating jobs start with a trigger. A house sale, a new baby, a tenant moving out, or the hallway that's been scuffed for three years and finally can't be ignored. People search for the job ("wallpaper hanger near me", "exterior house painters", "kitchen cabinet painting") or simply "painter and decorator" plus their town.

What happens next is quick. They open a few websites and look for three things: work that looks as good as they want theirs to, signs that you'll respect their home, and some idea of the cost. Price matters, but it's rarely the first filter. Most people would rather pay a bit more than look at a wobbly line on the ceiling every day for the next ten years.

There's a second kind of customer, too: landlords, letting agents and property managers. They want reliability over flair. Turn up when you said, finish between tenancies, send photos and an invoice. A decorator who shows that on their website gets the repeat work.

Decorator website design that shows the finish

Decorating is sold on photos, so good decorator website design starts with the camera. Shoot in daylight with the ceiling lights off. Get one wide shot of the finished room, then close-ups of what customers notice: the cut-in line where wall meets ceiling, the gloss on a stair spindle, the pattern match on a wallpaper join. Before and after shots from the same spot do the rest.

Colour and finish galleries

People rarely picture "a painted room". They picture a colour. So I tag each project by room, colour and finish: a dark green hallway in eggshell, a sage kitchen with sprayed units, a white Victorian staircase with glossed spindles. Using the paint maker's colour names, where you know them, helps people imagine it in their own house.

A word of honesty here. Plenty of people search colour names for inspiration, and most of them aren't looking for a decorator. The gallery's real job is to convince the person who has already found you, not to pull in browsers from the other end of the country. That's still worth a lot.

Specialist work earns its own page

The jobs that pay best are often the ones people search for by name. If you do any of these well, each deserves its own page on your painting and decorating website:

  • Kitchen cabinet painting and spraying. A popular way to change a kitchen without replacing it. Show the prep, the finish and before and after shots of real kitchens.
  • Wallpaper hanging. Feature walls, murals, lining paper and expensive papers people don't want to risk themselves. Close-ups of matched joins sell it.
  • uPVC and exterior spraying. Windows, doors and garage doors resprayed instead of replaced. Explain how you prepare the surface and what the customer can expect from the finish.
  • Exterior painting. Render, masonry, fascias, sash windows and front doors, with a line on why you watch the forecast.
  • Commercial and rental work. Out-of-hours working, larger areas and quick turnarounds between tenancies.

That's how I build websites for painters and decorators: each page talks only about that job, shows only those photos and asks for the details you need to price it. That's how one page matches what someone typed and convinces them in the same visit.

Dulux Select, the PDA and the proof that counts

Two schemes come up again and again with homeowners. The Dulux Select Decorators scheme has run since 1996. Members go through reference checks and an on-site assessment, follow a code of conduct and offer a two-year workmanship guarantee. The Painting & Decorating Association vets its members for quality of workmanship, expects them to follow a code of practice and offers a mediation service if a customer and a member fall out.

If you hold either, it goes near the top of the site, with a link so people can check. So do your public liability insurance and any guarantee you give yourself. If you don't hold one, that's fine: clear photos, honest prices and good reviews do much of the same job. I won't put a logo on your site that you haven't earned.

Prices, day rates and the cheaper quote

Every decorator knows the call: "someone else said half that". Your website can head it off. Explain what's in your price: filling and sanding, caulking, a mist coat on new plaster, primer on bare wood, two full coats, the trade paint you use and the tidy-up each evening. Once people see the work behind a quote, the cheaper one starts to look like what it is.

Publishing prices helps too, as long as they make sense to a customer. A day rate on its own doesn't, because nobody knows how many days their job takes. A starting price for common jobs does: a single bedroom, a hallway, stairs and landing, a set of kitchen units.

A worked example, with made-up numbers. Say you're a decorator in Chesterfield and a hallway, stairs and landing leaves you £500 after paint and materials. My Job Winning Website is £497 one-off, plus £20 a month for hosting and your web address. Two extra hallways in a year and it has paid for itself with change. Try your own numbers in the calculator above, and see what a tradesman website costs in the UK for the full comparison.

Quiet winters, busy summers

Decorating has a rhythm. Exterior work piles up from spring to early autumn, then the phone goes quiet just as the days get short. A website can lean into that. Over winter, the homepage pushes interiors, wallpaper and commercial work. From February, exteriors and spraying move to the front, so you're booking summer work before the good weather arrives.

Reviews keep the whole thing working. Ask every customer while the paint is still drying, and make it easy for them. My guide on how to get more Google reviews has the wording I'd use. And if you plaster as well as decorate, have a look at websites for plasterers, because the two trades often share customers.

Once the site is live, SEO for painters and decorators is how you get it in front of more people in the towns you want, month to month, and only if you want it. If you'd like to see your own site before deciding anything, ask for a free website mockup.

Decorating website questions, answered.

How does payment work?

No deposit and no booking fee. You pay nothing until you've seen and approved your homepage design. Then you pay the full price in one go, and I build the rest. The price is one-off, with no VAT to add.

What if I don't like the first design?

You see your homepage design within 24 hours of your set-up call, before you pay anything, and 1 round of changes is included. If it still isn't right, walk away and owe nothing. That's the See-It-First Guarantee.

How long does the build take?

Your site goes live within 7 working days of your start date, once I have your details, logins and photos. If it's late because of a delay on my side, I pay you £100.

Do I own the website?

Yes. Your site, your domain and your content belong to your business. Nothing is held hostage.

What do I need to provide?

The basics: the services you offer, the areas you cover, and any photos of your work. I'll guide you through the rest.

Do I need to write anything?

No. I write every page based on your trade, your services and the areas you cover. You review it all before anything goes live.

What photos do you need?

Real photos of finished jobs, even ones taken on your phone. If you don't have enough yet, I'll tell you honestly where that leaves a gap, rather than filling it with stock photos that undersell your work.

What should a painting and decorating website include?

Close-up photos of your work in good light, a page for each job you want more of, your Google reviews, how you protect furniture and floors, the towns you cover, any memberships you hold and an easy way to send room sizes and photos for a quote. A rough guide to prices helps too.

Should I put my day rate on my website?

You can, but a day rate on its own often confuses people, because they don't know how many days their job takes. A starting price for common jobs, like a single bedroom or a hallway, stairs and landing, is easier to understand. It puts off the bargain hunters and reassures the people who are ready to book.

How do I compete with cheaper decorators online?

Show what the extra money buys. Explain your prep (filling, sanding, caulking, a mist coat on new plaster, primer on bare wood), the paint you use and how you leave the house each day. Then back it up with close-up photos and reviews. People who care about the finish will pay for it once they can see the difference.

Can the site show my Dulux Select or PDA membership?

Yes. Your Dulux Select Decorators membership, PDA membership, insurance and any guarantee you offer go where people decide who to ask for a quote, with a link so they can check. I only show what you actually hold, so the site stays accurate.

Can the site help me win commercial decorating work?

Yes, with a page of its own. Property managers, landlords and businesses want to know you can work evenings or weekends, keep a site safe and tidy, handle larger areas and send proper paperwork. A commercial page with that kind of work on it gives them their own way in, without confusing homeowners.

Exterior work dries up in winter. Can the website help?

It can lean into the seasons. Over winter, the homepage and buttons push interiors, wallpaper and commercial work. From early spring, exterior painting and spraying move to the front, so you're booking summer work before the good weather arrives. It's a small change that helps keep the diary fuller through the quiet months.

What are SEO foundations?

The groundwork Google needs to find and understand your site: page titles written for the searches you want, a clear page structure, fast pages on mobile, your business details kept consistent, and a sitemap so Google knows every page exists. It's the base that Local SEO builds on later.

Will my website rank on Google?

No honest person can promise you a position, and I won't. Google decides where your pages show up. What I can promise is that your site launches with the SEO foundations done properly. If you want more from Google after that, Local SEO is there month to month, but it's up to you.

What happens to my current Google rankings?

The pages already bringing you visitors are redirected properly to their new addresses, so you keep the ground you've already gained.

What happens to my domain and email?

They stay yours. Your new site goes live on your own web address, and your email is left alone, because it runs separately from the website. Nothing is switched off until the new site is working.

Are there any ongoing costs?

A yearly fee for hosting and your web address, paid by you. I tell you the exact amount in writing before you pay anything. Local SEO is optional, month to month, if you want it.

Can I update the site myself?

Yes. You own it, so you can make changes yourself or ask anyone you like. For the first 90 days after launch, I make tweaks for you and keep improving the site based on what the tracking shows.

What happens after launch?

For 90 days, I keep an eye on how the site is doing and improve it based on what the tracking shows. Questions come straight to me, not a helpdesk. After that, it's yours to run however suits you.
