Are they finding you?

A door that won't shut, a shelf that needs putting up, a wardrobe still in its box. Nobody waits for a recommendation for that. They search "handyman near me", look at the map, and ring someone with decent reviews who looks trustworthy enough to let into the house. SEO for handymen is about being that someone.

It means a Google Business Profile that puts you in the map for the towns you want, a page for each kind of job you'd like more of, and the reviews, insurance and DBS check that make a stranger comfortable handing you a key.

Sound familiar?

  1. 1

You're paying per lead for people who were searching for you anyway.

  2. 2

Competitors show up in the Google map results. You don't.

  3. 3

Your website doesn't show up for the services you actually offer.

  4. 4

Your reviews are thin, old or scattered across different sites.

Good work isn't enough if nobody can find it. SEO makes sure they can.

How people search for a handyman

Handyman searches are short, local and often a list of small jobs rolled into one. Good handyman SEO gets you found for the general search and for the specific jobs people type.

  • handyman near me

The big one, won in the map results. Your profile, your service area and recent reviews decide whether you appear at all.

  • handyman [your town]

Often someone with a list of jobs saved up. An area page for each town where you can show real jobs helps you appear there.

  • flat pack assembly / shelf fitting near me

Specific jobs in the customer's own words. A page for each popular job catches searches a general homepage misses.

  • handyman for elderly parent [your town]

Often a son or daughter booking for a parent. Clear DBS and insurance details, and reviews from older customers, are what they're looking for.

  • property maintenance [your town]

Landlords and letting agents with repeat work. A page aimed at them, covering how you report back, photograph jobs and invoice, can bring steady bookings.

  • door hanging / curtain pole fitting

Small jobs, but people search them by name. Short pages for the ones you like doing add up to a lot of enquiries over a year.

Rankings you own,
not clicks you rent.

What SEO for handymen actually involves

Every month, I work on the things that decide which handymen Google shows. Here's what that looks like for a one-person or small handyman business.

  1. 01

Your Google Business Profile, set up for handyman work

Google's handyman category, your home address hidden, a service area that matches how far you'll really drive for a two-hour job, photos of real work, and your services list filled in properly.

  2. 02

A page for each job people search for

Flat-pack, shelves and mirrors, doors, curtain poles, small repairs, garden jobs. The ones you want more of get their own page, with photos and the towns you cover.

  3. 03

    Trust shown clearly

Your public liability insurance, your DBS check and a real photo of you, where people can see them, because letting a stranger into the house is the real decision.

  4. 04

Reviews that mention the job and the town

A simple routine for asking every customer, with a direct link. You finish lots of small jobs, so reviews can build quickly if you ask every time.

  5. 05

    Showing up in AI answers

More people ask ChatGPT or Google's AI for a reliable handyman nearby. Consistent details, clear job pages and steady reviews make you easier to name.

What's included,
every month.

How people choose a handyman (it's mostly trust)

Handyman work is the odd one out among trades. The jobs are small, the customer often has a list of five of them, and the real decision usually isn't price. It's whether they're comfortable letting you into the house.

So local SEO for handyman services has two jobs. Get you in front of people searching nearby, then answer the trust question before they ring. Plenty of handymen manage the first half and forget the second.

Think about who tends to book a handyman: older homeowners, busy parents, landlords, people booking for a relative who lives alone. They read your reviews for words like "reliable", "tidy" and "turned up when he said he would". They want a face, a name and proof you're insured.

DBS checks, insurance and being clear about the limits of the job

  • A basic DBS check. If you work in England and Wales you can apply for your own basic DBS check online. It costs £20 as of October 2026 and usually takes a few days. Say you have one, and when it was issued. Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own versions.
  • Public liability insurance. It isn't a legal requirement for a sole trader, but it's one of the first things careful customers and letting agents ask about. Show the level of cover. If you take on staff, employers' liability insurance is a legal requirement in most cases.
  • A real photo of you. You, your van and your work beat any stock image. People want to know who's turning up.

Then be clear about what you don't do. By law, gas work has to be done by an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Notifiable electrical work, like a new circuit or a consumer unit change, needs a registered electrician or building control sign-off. Swapping a light fitting like for like is one thing; promising rewiring is another. A page that's honest about the limits reads as more trustworthy, not less.

Getting a handyman into the Google map results

For most handyman searches, the map results are where the calls come from. The basics:

  • Google's handyman category as your primary category. Only add others for work that's a real, separate part of the business.
  • Your home address hidden. Google's guidelines say a service-area business should hide it, and nobody needs your house on a map.
  • A service area that matches the drive you'll actually make for a two-hour job. You can list up to 20 areas.
  • Your services list filled in, starting with the jobs you want more of.
  • New photos every week or two: before and after, a fitted door, a finished set of shelves.

Reviews matter more than usual here, because handyman customers are buying trust. The good news is that you finish lots of small jobs, so you can build reviews far faster than a builder who completes six projects a year. Ask every customer, every time, with a direct link. Google doesn't allow you to ask only the happy ones or offer a discount for a review. My Google Business Profile checklist and the guide to getting more Google reviews cover both in detail. If asking feels awkward, automatic review requests can send the text for you after each job.

Job pages: rank for the work you actually want

Most handyman websites have one page listing thirty jobs. That page can't rank for any of them, because people search for the job, not the trade: "flat pack assembly Rotherham", "hang a door near me", "TV wall mounting".

Pick the five or six jobs that pay best for your time or lead to repeat work, and give each its own page: photos, what's included, roughly how long it takes, and the towns you cover. Say you're a handyman in Chesterfield who's good at doors and hates flat-pack. Build the door page properly and leave flat-pack as a line on your services page.

A page for landlords and letting agents

Landlord work is the closest a handyman gets to a steady contract: a list of fixes between tenancies, regular call-outs, and an agent who'll ring you again if you're reliable. Agents care about different things from homeowners. How fast do you respond, do you send photos of the finished job, is your invoice clear, will you collect keys from the office? A page that answers those questions, aimed squarely at them, can be one of the most useful pages a handyman has.

Area pages work the same way as job pages. Build one for each town where you can show real jobs, and skip the rest. My guide to service area pages explains where the line is.

If you haven't got a website yet, a simple one built this way is often worth more than months of SEO on a site that can't do it. That's what my websites for handymen are for.

Is handyman SEO worth paying for?

I'll be blunt, because handyman jobs are smaller than most trades' jobs. The monthly fee on this page is a real cost. Say your average job is £120 (use your own figure): you'd need four or five extra jobs a month just to cover it. Handyman SEO makes sense when:

  • you want to move into a better-paid area or type of work,
  • you're taking on a second person and need more volume,
  • you want landlord and letting agent work that repeats every month,
  • or you're paying a lead site for jobs you could be winning directly.

If you're already booked up from word of mouth, don't buy SEO. Get your free profile right, ask every customer for a review, and come back when you want to grow. And if you lose jobs because you can't answer the phone up a ladder, a missed-call text back might win you more work than any ranking.

When you're ready, my free Search Opportunity Review shows what's winnable in your towns before you spend a penny.

Handyman SEO questions, answered.

Is SEO worth it for a handyman?

It can be, if you want more work in a particular area, more of a particular kind of job, or enough work to take on a second pair of hands. Handyman jobs are small, so the sums matter. If you're already booked weeks ahead from repeat customers and word of mouth, I'll tell you not to spend the money yet.

How do handymen get more customers from Google?

Mostly through the map results. A complete Google Business Profile with the right category and service area, a steady flow of reviews that mention real jobs, and a simple website with a page for each job you want more of. That combination does most of the work.

Do I need a DBS check to work as a handyman?

There's no law saying every handyman needs one, but plenty of customers ask, especially families booking for an older relative. In England and Wales you can apply for a basic DBS check yourself online. Showing it on your profile and website answers the question before they have to ask.

Should I list every job I do?

List the ones you want more of. A page for door hanging or flat-pack assembly can bring in steady work. If you hate tiling, don't build a tiling page. SEO steers who finds you, so point it at the work that pays best for your time.

Can I advertise electrical or gas work as a handyman?

Only work you're allowed to do. Gas work must be done by an engineer on the Gas Safe Register, and notifiable electrical work such as a new circuit or a consumer unit change needs a registered electrician or building control sign-off. I keep your pages to the jobs you can legally take on.

Do I need a website, or is a Google profile enough?

A good profile can win plenty of handyman calls on its own, so if you have neither, start there. A simple website helps you show up for specific jobs and gives people somewhere to check you out before they let you in, which is why most handymen who want to grow end up needing one.

How long before I see more handyman enquiries?

Profile and review work can move your map visibility within the first couple of months. Job and area pages usually take a few months to settle. Google decides the order, so I won't promise positions, but I report what's moving every month in plain English.

What is SEO for tradesmen?

It's the work that gets a trade business showing up when local people search Google, or ask AI tools, for the work you do in the areas you cover. For most trades that means three places: the Google map results, the normal results below them, and AI answers.

How is tradesman SEO different from ordinary SEO?

Your customers search for a trade and a place, like "roofer Sheffield" or "emergency plumber near me". So tradesman SEO is mostly local: your Google Business Profile, a page for each service and area you cover, your reviews, and your business listed the same way across trusted directories. Ranking nationally for broad terms rarely makes the phone ring.

What's included each month?

Keeping your Google map listing up to date, finding what your customers search for, a page for every job you do and every town you cover, fixing anything on your website that stops Google showing it, getting you listed on the trusted directories Google checks, and a plain-English report on what I did, what moved and what's next. You work directly with me throughout.

How long until I see results?

SEO builds over time. Most businesses see early movement within the first few months, with bigger gains as the work compounds. I'll show you what's moving in every monthly report.

Can you guarantee I'll rank number one?

No, and be wary of anyone who does. Nobody controls Google. What I can promise is proper work, focused on the searches that bring you jobs, and honest reporting on progress.

Is SEO better than paying for leads or ads?

They do different jobs. Ads and lead sites stop the day you stop paying, and lead sites charge you for enquiries from people who were already searching for your trade. SEO builds rankings your business owns, so every gain keeps working for you month after month.

Do I need a new website for SEO to work?

Not usually. Technical fixes and new service and area pages can normally be added to the site you already have. If your site is holding you back, I'll tell you straight in your Search Opportunity Review.

Do you work with my trade?

Very likely. I have SEO pages for over 40 trades, from roofers and electricians to tree surgeons and window cleaners. If yours isn't listed, the approach is the same: find what your customers search for, then get you showing up for it.

What is the Search Opportunity Review?

I look at where you rank now, where your competitors are beating you, how many jobs you're likely missing, and what I'd fix first. There's no obligation, and I reply personally within 24 hours.

Is there a long contract?

No. It's £495 a month, and you stay because it's working, not because you're tied in.

What happens if I stop?

You keep everything that's been built: the pages, the profile, the reviews and the links. Unlike paid ads, your visibility doesn't vanish overnight.
