Checkatrade Alternatives: Better Ways to Get Work (and How to Cancel)

by James Tandy Getting leads 10 min read

Other lead platforms, the free options you own outright, and the exact steps to cancel a Checkatrade membership without paying for a second year by accident.

Most people looking for a Checkatrade alternative are in one of two spots. Either the leads aren't covering the fee, or the renewal date is coming up and they want to know what else is out there before they're signed up for another year.

Either way, this is the honest list. Other lead platforms, with prices checked as of October 2026. The alternatives you own outright, which most lists leave out because nobody earns a commission on them. And exactly how to cancel a Checkatrade membership, because that's where people get caught.

My bias: I build websites and do local SEO for trades, so the owned options are my bread and butter. I'll still tell you when a platform is the better call.

First, what's actually wrong?

Swapping one platform for another only helps if you know what's broken. It's usually one of these:

  • The price. The monthly fee is more than the jobs are worth. A pay-per-lead platform or an owned option can fix that.
  • The competition. You're one of several trades on every lead and losing on price. Another platform with the same model has the same problem.
  • The contract. You don't like being locked in for a year. Pay-as-you-go options fix that.
  • The dependence. Every enquiry comes through someone else's website. Only the owned options fix that.

Keep your answer in mind as you read the list. It tells you which alternative to Checkatrade actually solves your problem rather than moving it somewhere else.

One name you won't see: Rated People. It closed its trade memberships in September 2026 and its jobs now go to Checkatrade members, so it's not an alternative any more. The full story is in my Rated People cost guide.

The alternatives you own (start here)

These are slower to get going than a platform, and nobody rings you to sell them. But they don't charge per lead, they don't stop working when you stop paying, and nobody can put the price up at renewal.

Google Business Profile

This is the listing that shows on the map when someone searches "plumber near me" or "roofer Barnsley". Google says you can manage how your business shows on Maps and Search at no charge. It's the nearest thing to a free Checkatrade: a profile, reviews, photos and a call button, in front of people at the exact moment they're looking.

Most trade profiles I look at are half finished. Fill in every service, set your service area honestly, add real job photos and post now and then. That alone puts you ahead of a lot of your competitors.

Reviews you keep

Your Checkatrade reviews don't come with you when you leave (more on that below). Your Google reviews do, because they sit on your profile, not someone else's site. If you're still a member, start asking every customer for a Google review as well, today. By the time your renewal comes round, you'll have something to stand on.

A website that turns searches into calls

Your website is where people go after they've heard your name, whether that's from a neighbour, your van, a Google search or a platform listing. If it's slow, out of date or missing, you lose them. It doesn't need to be fancy. It needs to say what you do and where, show proof, and make ringing you easy.

My Job Winning Website is £497 one-off, and you see the homepage design before you pay a penny. Hosting and your web address are paid by you, at £20 a month.

Local SEO

This is the work that gets your profile and website showing for the searches that matter in your area. It compounds: what you earn this year keeps sending work next year without a meter running. It's also slower than a platform, usually months rather than weeks, so it's best started while you still have another source of work. I do it as Local SEO for trades at £495 a month with no contract, but plenty of the basics you can do yourself.

Other lead platforms worth a look

If you still want leads delivered, these are the main alternatives to Checkatrade in the UK. I've compared the big three side by side in Checkatrade vs MyBuilder vs TrustATrader.

MyBuilder

Free to join, no membership, no contract. You show interest in jobs for free and pay a shortlist fee only when the homeowner shortlists you, typically £2 to £35 depending on the job, according to MyBuilder's sign-up page. The weak spot: you're paying for contact details, and some homeowners shortlist you and then go quiet. Full breakdown in MyBuilder for tradesmen.

TrustATrader

The closest like-for-like swap. A vetted directory with reviews, one annual fee and no per-lead charges, and its terms cap each trade category at ten members per area. But the price isn't published, the fee is paid upfront, and you can't cancel mid-year. Read how much TrustATrader costs before you book the callback.

Bark

Pay-as-you-go credits, and no contract unless you choose a subscription. Up to five professionals can respond to each general request, and credits bought since November 2025 expire after three months. It tends to suit higher-value services better than small call-outs. My verdict is in is Bark worth it for tradesmen.

MyJobQuote

Memberships come with a free month's trial and no contract, or you can buy credits as you go. It tells homeowners up to three local trades will be in touch, and gives new trades a free lead when they sign up and add a payment card. The downside: you only see the prices once you've signed up.

Google Local Services Ads

Google runs its own pay-per-lead ads for some trades, shown above the normal results. Whether they're open to your trade in your area is something you check in Google's own sign-up. It's still renting leads, but you're renting from the place your customers already search.

How to cancel a Checkatrade membership

This is the bit that catches people. Checkatrade's paid memberships run for 12 months and renew automatically for another 12 unless you cancel in the right window, in the right way. Here's what its master service terms say, as of October 2026.

  1. Find your renewal date

It's 12 months from the start date in your confirmation email, or from your last renewal. Put a reminder in your phone for 40 days before it, so you're ready when the window opens.

  2. Phone in the 35 days before renewal

The terms say the business owner has to call Checkatrade on 0333 014 6190, no earlier than 35 days before the renewal date. Checkatrade's own summary of the terms says it can't be done by email. Ring too early and it doesn't count. Leave it too late and you're into another year.

  3. Get it confirmed in writing

Note the date, the time and the name of the person you spoke to, and ask for an email confirming your membership won't renew. You may be offered a deal to stay, so decide before you ring whether any discount would change your mind.

  4. Don't just cancel the direct debit

The terms are blunt about this. Stopping your direct debit doesn't end the agreement, you'd still owe the fees for the rest of the term, and it can get your account suspended. Cancel properly first.

  5. Take Checkatrade off your stuff

Once you've left, the terms say Checkatrade's logo, its reviews and references to it have to come off your business materials. Think van livery, website, quote templates and leaflets. If the tick is on your van doors, budget for new graphics.

Check the current number and terms before you ring, in case anything has changed since I wrote this.

Can you cancel Checkatrade early?

Mostly, no. There's a two-business-day cooling-off period from when you sign up, whichever membership you're on. After that, the terms only let you end it early in limited cases, such as Checkatrade breaching the agreement and not putting it right, or a fee increase you don't agree to, as long as you tell them within 30 days. Checkatrade can also raise your fee at renewal with at least 30 days' notice.

If you've had a genuinely bad deal, put it in writing and ask. But plan on paying to the end of your term.

What happens to your reviews when you leave?

The terms say Checkatrade may keep your listing and reviews on its site, but you'd only show up when someone searches your business by name, with a note that you no longer have an active agreement. Its terms for the Approved tier say that when a paid membership ends, you drop to a free profile. Either way, your right to use those reviews in your own marketing ends.

That's the real cost of leaving, and it's why I keep banging on about Google reviews. Years of five-star feedback you can't take with you is rented ground.

How to switch without an empty diary

The mistake I'd avoid is cancelling on a bad Monday and hoping the phone rings by itself. A gentler plan, if your renewal is a few months off:

  • Now: sort your Google Business Profile and start asking every customer, platform or not, for a Google review.
  • Next month: get a website up that makes ringing you easy, if you haven't got one that works.
  • Alongside: try one no-contract platform if you need leads in the meantime, and work out the cost of every job you win.
  • Renewal window: look at where your work came from over the last three months, then decide. Stay, drop to a cheaper plan, or cancel.

Plenty of firms keep a platform for fill-in work while their own presence grows into the main source, then drop it when the balance tips. That's a perfectly sensible way to use Checkatrade. Being stuck on it in year six because nothing else was ever built is the trap.

I've laid out every route to work, paid and owned, on my lead generation for tradesmen page.

FAQs

What is the best alternative to Checkatrade?

For most trades, a well-run Google Business Profile with steady reviews, backed by a simple website. If you want leads delivered, MyBuilder is the lowest-risk platform to try because there's no contract or membership. TrustATrader is the closest like-for-like directory.

Is there a free alternative to Checkatrade?

Yes. Your Google Business Profile costs nothing, and Google reviews are free to collect. Checkatrade itself has a free profile tier too, but it doesn't come with leads.

Can I cancel Checkatrade by email?

Not according to its terms as of October 2026. The business owner has to phone 0333 014 6190 in the 35 days before the renewal date. Ask for an email confirming the cancellation afterwards.

What happens if I just stop paying Checkatrade?

The terms say cancelling the direct debit doesn't end the agreement, you'd still owe the fees for the rest of the term, and your account can be suspended. Unpaid fees can also go to debt collection with charges and interest added. Cancel properly instead.

Do I lose my Checkatrade reviews if I leave?

You lose the right to use them in your own marketing. Checkatrade may keep them on its site, but you'd only appear when someone searches your business name. That's why it pays to collect Google reviews alongside them from day one.
