Penistone sits at the western edge of Barnsley borough on the S36 postcode, up where the land starts climbing towards the Peak District. It is a market town with a rural hinterland rather than a town with suburbs: Thurlstone, Oxspring, Hoylandswaine, Silkstone and Cawthorne within a short drive, and beyond them farms and single houses strung along lanes. The A628 runs through, east to Barnsley and west over the Pennines, and the Penistone Line carries people to Huddersfield one way and Sheffield the other.
