SEO Chesterfield: Local SEO for Businesses That Want Customers
Chesterfield is in Derbyshire and this page is not going to pretend otherwise. It is also twenty-five minutes down the A61, and the search terms here take roughly half the effort of Sheffield's.
- From £495 a month, no lock-in and no notice period
- Main term difficulty 11, against Sheffield's 18
- Free audit back within 3 working days, no sales call
How customers here find trades
Chesterfield is a Derbyshire town with a Sheffield postcode, and that small administrative oddity explains more about local search here than anything else on this page.
The council is Chesterfield Borough Council, the county above it is Derbyshire, and the letters on the front of the post are S40 and S41 — a Sheffield postcode. Your customers think about none of it. They think about whether the person they are ringing can be at the house this afternoon.
Somebody in Hasland, Walton or Wingerworth types the job and the town. Electrician Chesterfield. Emergency plumber Chesterfield. Roofer Chesterfield. This is the group the table below can measure, and it is the group most local firms compete for badly.
Somebody in Dronfield, on the A61 between the Crooked Spire and Sheffield city centre, may type either town name or neither — from a kitchen there both places are a sensible drive. A website optimised for one town name loses that village without noticing.
Somebody in Staveley, Brimington or Clay Cross opens Maps and rings whoever is close, and for urgent work a good share never scroll past those first three listings.
Three habits inside one catchment, and only the first of them is countable. Read the 110 below as the floor of the demand rather than the measurement of it.
Are you a Chesterfield SEO company or a Sheffield one?
A Sheffield one, and I am not going to fudge it. I am one person based in Sheffield, working across South Yorkshire and over the border into north Derbyshire, and Chesterfield is twenty-five minutes down the A61. If walking into a local office matters more to you than the work does, use somebody in the town and I will not talk you out of it. The border is an administrative line rather than a trading one, but you get to decide whether that holds for your business.
The real search demand here
110 searches a month for the main term, at a keyword difficulty of 11; the softest phrasing on the table is scored 8. The main Sheffield term is 18 and the main Barnsley term 12, so the first page here is a shorter climb than the city twenty-five minutes up the road. The odd figure is the advertising cost: £4.27 a click, second only to Doncaster in this plan, and nearly three times what a web design click costs in the same town. Somebody has already worked out that these enquiries are worth paying for.
| Search term | Per month | Difficulty | Role on this page |
|---|---|---|---|
| seo chesterfield | 110 | 11 | Main term |
| chesterfield seo | 110 | 8 | Same page, same intent |
| chesterfield seo company | 40 | 17 | Secondary |
| seo services chesterfield | 30 | 11 | Secondary |
| seo company chesterfield | 20 | 13 | Body copy |
SE Ranking, Google UK, August 2026. Volumes are monthly averages for the exact term, difficulty scores the first page out of 100, and the click cost is what the top advertising slot is going for. All three are one tool's estimates rather than counts from Google. Read them with the caveat on the web design page in mind: this town shares its name with two places in the United States, and keyword tools are not always careful about the difference.
The listing work that behaves oddly on a county line
Nearly everything that makes a Google Business Profile work is general. The category, what you list underneath it, the hours, the pictures, getting your details to agree wherever they turn up online, your own website included, are all covered in the article on why a profile does not come up, and none of it is Derbyshire. Do it anyway.
One thing is Derbyshire. That S40 postcode does not only confuse people, it confuses the machinery. Google itself mostly gets it right, because it works from the map rather than from the post. The directories, aggregators and stale listings feeding it do not, and a good number of them have quietly filed you under Sheffield.
The cheapest correction is in your reviews, because reviews are the one part of a listing written by somebody who is not you. A customer saying the job was in Staveley, in Wingerworth or out at Clay Cross is describing your patch in Derbyshire place names, in text nobody can accuse you of composing. Volume counts everywhere. Here the wording is doing a second job it does not have to do in Rotherham.
What do 'SEO services' in Chesterfield actually include?
The general list of services, profile work, service pages, reviews, citations, technical fixes and a monthly report, is on the service page rather than repeated here. Three parts of it are local, and they are where the first month goes: filtering the American Chesterfields out of your keyword set, correcting the county wherever the directories have you under Sheffield, and drawing a service area that reaches into North East Derbyshire and Bolsover district, where a fair share of a Chesterfield trade's work actually is.
How long before anything happens in Chesterfield?
The county corrections move fastest, because they are factual rather than competitive — a directory entry with you in the wrong place is fixed once and stays fixed. The map listing usually shifts next, sometimes inside weeks. The ordinary results are a matter of months rather than weeks, and months more before the position stops wobbling. Difficulty 11 against Sheffield's 18 means a shorter climb here, not that Google grades you any faster, and nobody can give you a date.
Reviews that name Derbyshire places
Chesterfield, Staveley, Whittington, Wingerworth. Asking every customer while they are still pleased with you is most of the job; the place name in the sentence is the part that is worth more here than it would be a borough north.
Half your catchment is another district
Chesterfield Borough Council covers the town, Brimington, Staveley, Whittington, Hasland and Walton. Dronfield, Wingerworth and Clay Cross are North East Derbyshire; Bolsover is a district again. A service area that stops at the borough boundary stops well short of where the van goes.
The first thing I check on a new SEO account
Nothing in the monthly routine varies by town, and the whole of it is set out on the Local SEO page. One item in the first month is different here, and it is why I would not take a keyword report about this town at face value from anybody, myself included.
Before deciding which searches are worth chasing, they have to be checked for which country they are in. This town shares its name with a suburb of St Louis and a county in Virginia, and the tools do not reliably keep the three apart. The web design table on the other half of this site carries 90 searches a month for "web design chesterfield uk" — ninety people, every month, adding a country because they got tired of results three thousand miles away. If that many customers are correcting the problem by hand, the tool reporting on the same phrases may not be correcting it at all.
The effect is small and it saves you money: a term that looks worth chasing turns out to be worth a fraction of what it claims, and a report built on the unfiltered figure always looks healthier than the business does. What arrives instead is a plain account of what moved and what did not. Nothing in it will be a guaranteed ranking, a projected call volume or a finish date.
SEO services and website work, joined up
The services split three ways, and none of it needs a glossary. On the website: technical seo, a page for each service, and content written around the searches that pay — the website is where half the seo lands, and a website that says plainly what the business does is the foundation every ranking rests on. Around the web: the business profile, the citations, steady review collection. In the reporting: search positions, enquiries, and a straight answer on what the marketing returned.
The design of the website belongs in that conversation, because seo and web design are halves of one result: the search work earns the visit and the design converts it. Where an audit finds a website that cannot convert, the honest sequence is design first and seo services second — advice that costs me a retainer and saves the business a wasted one. Website design and search work bought together also come cheaper in attention: one provider, one plan, one report.
What is deliberately not included: PPC management sold as a default, and any promise built on a search engine's private algorithm. Pay-per-click is a fair option in a town where the click sells for £4.27, but it is a separate marketing budget answering a separate question, and folding PPC into an SEO retainer hides which of the two is actually working. Google moves, the seo adjusts, the report says what changed. For a business weighing the seo against a website rebuild, the audit answers it with the borough's own numbers rather than instinct — which of the two the money should buy first here, and what each seo pound is being spent against.
The strangest number in this borough
What this costs is stated further up and does not vary. What is worth adding is the one figure in Chesterfield's data I find genuinely hard to explain.
The top advertising click on Chesterfield SEO terms sells for £4.27. That is second only to Doncaster in this plan, it is above Sheffield's £3.97, and it is nearly three times what a web design click costs in this same town at £1.52. Now hold it against the difficulty column: 11 on the main term, 8 on its softest phrasing, against Sheffield's 18. Somebody is paying £4.27 a time to reach ground that is sitting there unclaimed at difficulty 8. Either the advertisers know something the difficulty scores do not, or the unpaid version of this work is simply not being done here. On the evidence of the listings I open around S40 and S41, it is the second.
Which produces an audit outcome that costs me the sale and comes up more here than anywhere else on this site: the website is fine, the listing is fine, and the problem is that half of what the internet says about you has you in the wrong county. You do not need a retainer for that, and the audit will say so.
What it costs, wherever you are
These do not move by town, by trade or by how the conversation goes. They are the same on every page of this site, which is the point of publishing them.

Chesterfield and everywhere around it
I work across Derbyshire and the towns on its edges. These are the places with their own page — if yours is not listed, it almost certainly still gets covered, so ask.
What Chesterfield businesses ask before starting
On its own, probably not, and I would rather say so than pretend the headline term is the whole picture. The 110 is one phrase. Underneath it sit the trade-specific searches, the map pack, the ring of villages that never types the town name, and the people who open your website to check you exist after a recommendation. If that phrase were the only thing you ever ranked for, the sums would be thin.
The villages are usually where the work is. Brimington, Staveley, Whittington, Hasland, Walton, Wingerworth, Clay Cross, Dronfield and out towards Bolsover are all part of a normal catchment here, and Dronfield in particular repays setting up carefully.
No, and there is a catch here that does not apply elsewhere: first place in whose results? Search 'seo chesterfield' from Derbyshire, from London and from a laptop that believes it is in Missouri, and you get three different first pages. Anybody promising you a position ought to say which one they mean. Before any money changes hands you get a plain account of the obstacles, an estimate of which of them are actually movable, and the sort of timescale the movable ones need.
More on local SEO for trades
The county pages explain the service in full; the trade pages go into what changes when the job is roofing, plumbing, electrical or building.
